Between 1904 and 1906 1,000 bottles containing messages were dropped into the ocean as an experiment by the Marine Biological Association. One of those rare bottles recently resurfaced off the coast of Germany.
Marianne Winkler found the washed up bottle while on vacation. The bottle was so old that she apparently had to break it in order to retrieve the message from inside. According to BBC, it contained a postcard with instructions to return the card back to the Marine Biological Association for one shilling.
The MBA did confirm that the bottles were a part of one of George Parker Bidder’s research studies. Researchers believe that this bottle is the oldest message in a bottle to ever be recorded as found. Winkler, who is a retired postal worker received her schilling as a thanks from the association.
